Howe had watched FDR’s career and had written a favorable article on FDR. With Howe on his team, FDR now had expert advice to follow. After Woodrow Wilson won the presidency in the 1912 election, he tried to repay those who had supported him by finding positions for them in his administration. The newly named secretary of the treasury, William Gibbs McAdoo, offered FDR the position of assistant secretary of the treasury, but that did not interest him much.
It put FDR back in the public spotlight, if only momentarily, as a reminder that he had not disappeared completely from the political scene. Just a few days after the speech, one newspaper called Roosevelt “the real hero” of the convention. After his unsuccessful convention, Alfred Smith decided to run for reelection as governor of New York that November. , and won. Also in November 1924, the Democratic nominee for president, John W. Davis, lost badly to the Republican Calvin Coolidge, 15 million to 8 million votes.
