This incident no doubt left the town feeling jumpy, and ready to link sexual transgressions with civil anarchy. No wonder, then, when alarmed citizens of Los Angeles gathered to discuss news of Monterey’s open declaration of secession, they used the gendered language of female virtue and masculine honor. In Latin America during this era, a man’s honor depended in part on his ability to protect the women of his household from any hint of sexual dishonor. Women’s honor, by contrast, was considered passive, but their actions could preserve or even restore it by consenting to enclosure and protection by men.
